Tinker & Rasor M/1

The Tinker & Rasor M/1 is a portable low-voltage wet sponge holiday detector designed for non-destructive inspection of thin-film protective coatings.

Using a wet sponge inspection method, the M/1 helps inspectors identify holidays, pinholes, voids, and other coating discontinuities before assets are placed into service.

About the Tinker & Rasor M/1

The Tinker & Rasor M/1 is a portable low-voltage holiday detector designed for inspecting thin-film protective coatings without damaging the coating itself.

Unlike high-voltage holiday detectors that use spark testing, the M/1 uses a conductive sponge electrode and wetting solution to identify coating defects without damaging the coating being inspected.

Designed for coatings up to 20 mils thick, the M/1 can be used on both metal and concrete substrates. When the wetted sponge passes over a holiday, pinhole, or void, the circuit is completed through the conductive substrate, triggering an audible signal that alerts the inspector to the defect.

Common Applications for the Tinker & Rasor M/1

The Tinker & Rasor M/1 is commonly used for inspecting thin-film protective coatings on tanks, vessels, steel structures, concrete structures, and other coated assets. Its low-voltage wet sponge inspection method is designed for coatings up to 20 mils thick, making it a practical choice for coating systems that can’t be inspected using high-voltage spark testing.

The M/1 is frequently used during coating application projects, quality assurance inspections, maintenance programs, and acceptance testing. Because it provides non-destructive holiday detection, it is particularly well suited for applications where coating integrity must be verified without risking damage to the protective coating system.
