High-Speed Underwater Wireless Communication

Traditional underwater communications often require physical tethers or rely on acoustic systems that can limit bandwidth and introduce latency.

The Hydromea LUMA X-UV addresses this challenge by providing high-speed wireless optical communication in a compact subsea modem. Supporting data rates of up to 10 Mbit/sec, it enables real-time transmission of HD-quality video, 4K images, and other inspection data without a physical cable connection.

Reliable Wireless Communication in Ambient Light and Around ROV Lighting

One of the biggest challenges facing underwater optical communication systems is interference from surrounding light.

The Hydromea LUMA X-UV overcomes this challenge limitation by transmitting data in the ultraviolet (UV) spectrum. This patent-pending approach lets the modem maintain reliable wireless communication even in the presence of ambient light and artificial illumination, making it well suited for ROV inspection missions, subsea intervention work, and shallow-water operations where traditional optical communication systems may struggle.

Stream HD Video and 4K Images Without a Physical Tether

With data rates of up to 10 Mbit/sec and communication ranges of up to 50 meters, the Hydromea LUMA X-UV enables real-time transmission of HD-quality video and 4K images through water without requiring a physical communication cable.

Its low-latency, bidirectional optical communication helps operators receive inspection data as it is collected, supporting faster operational decisions and more efficient underwater workflows across offshore inspection, marine research, and robotic operations.

Compact Integration for ROVs, AUVs, and Permanent Subsea Systems

The Hydromea LUMA X-UV is designed with integration requirements in mind. Its compact titanium housing measures just 126 mm × 60 mm, while its low-power operation makes it well suited for battery-powered underwater vehicles.

An Ethernet-compatible interface allows the modem to integrate with existing subsea systems and even replace traditional cabled communication links in certain applications, helping simplify system architecture while enabling high-speed wireless data transfer.

With a standard 6,000-meter depth rating and an optional 12,000-meter configuration, the LUMA X-UV can support everything from shallow-water inspections to deep-ocean deployments.

Wirelessly Connect ROVs, Sensors, and Subsea Infrastructure

The Hydromea LUMA X-UV is designed to support far more than vehicle-to-vehicle communication.

Its high-speed, bidirectional optical link makes it suitable for transferring data between underwater sensors, permanently installed infrastructure, autonomous vehicles, and remotely operated systems, letting operators retrieve information without establishing a physical connection.

These capabilities make the modem a flexible communication platform for offshore inspections, subsea monitoring, scientific research, and marine robotics.
