Tritech Micron Gemini 720S: Real-Time Sonar for Small ROVs and AUVs

Poor visibility is a common challenge for underwater inspections. Whether you’re navigating around submerged infrastructure, inspecting confined spaces, or conducting surveys in turbid water, operators need reliable situational awareness even when optical cameras won’t work.

The Tritech Micron Gemini 720S addresses this challenge by delivering forward-looking multibeam imaging in a compact package designed specifically for smaller ROVs and AUVs.

It helps operators detect obstacles, navigate safely, and identify underwater targets without adding significant weight or power demands to their vehicle.

Compact Design for Smaller Underwater Vehicles

The Micron Gemini 720S was developed for operators who need the benefits of forward-looking imaging sonar without the size and integration challenges of larger systems.

Measuring just over 100 mm long and weighing only 0.43 kg in air, it can be easily installed on compact ROVs and AUVs.

Its low 8.5 W power requirement further supports integration with smaller vehicle platforms, letting operators add imaging sonar without significantly affecting power budgets or mission endurance.

Real-Time Multibeam Imaging in Low-Visibility Water

The Micron Gemini 720S uses multibeam imaging sonar to generate acoustic images that help operators continue navigating and inspecting when visual cameras can no longer provide useful information.

Operating at 720 kHz, the sonar delivers a 90° horizontal field of view, up to 50 meters of range, and update rates of up to 20 Hz, helping operators identify obstacles and underwater features as conditions change.

Tritech’s adaptive signal processing automatically switches between CHIRP and Continuous Wave (CW) modes to optimize image quality across different operating ranges, producing clear sonar imagery for navigation and target detection.

Reliable Obstacle Avoidance and Underwater Navigation

For operators of small ROVs and AUVs, avoiding collisions is just as important as collecting inspection data. The Micron Gemini 720S provides continuous forward-looking sonar imagery that helps pilots maintain awareness of nearby structures, seabed features, and potential hazards.

The combination of a wide viewing angle, frequent image updates, and multibeam imaging lets operators maneuver more efficiently through confined or low-visibility environments while reducing the risk of accidental contact with critical infrastructure.

Flexible Integration Across Underwater Inspection Platforms

The Tritech Micron Gemini 720S supports both Ethernet (100Base-T) and serial communications (RS232 or RS485), allowing operators and vehicle manufacturers to smoothly incorporate the sonar into new or existing ROV and AUV platforms.

The sonar is compatible with Tritech’s Genesis software suite for configuration, operation, and real-time visualization. Also, an auxiliary serial port also supports daisy chaining compatible Tritech sensors, such as the Micron Echo Sounder and Micron USBL Modem, letting operators expand vehicle capabilities without introducing separate communication systems.
